When Life Changes Your Pace

Lessons in Resilience, Perspective, and Moving Forward Differently

Sometimes life changes your pace in ways you never planned for.  Since late December, I’ve been navigating a new diagnosis: Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).  MCAS is a complex immune condition that can affect many systems in the body. For me, it arrived quietly at first and then very suddenly became impossible to ignore.  One of the most unexpected ways it showed up was through my voice.  My vocal cords were affected, and months later I’m still working through speech therapy to rebuild strength.  For someone who communicates, teaches, and coaches for a living, losing ease in my voice was not something I was prepared for.  But, the voice challenges were only part of the experience.  At one point, I developed severe hives that covered my entire body.  I also experienced episodes of angioedema from the neck up that made swallowing and breathing difficult something that led to multiple emergency room visits and eventually long-term treatment with a monoclonal antibody injection.

🌿 It was frightening.

🌿 It was exhausting.

And, it forced me to confront something many of us struggle with:

How do you take care of yourself without abandoning the things that matter most?

When Your Body Forces You to Slow Down

Most of us move through life at a pace that feels normal.  We manage responsibilities.  We support others.  We solve problems quickly.  We keep things moving forward.  Until suddenly something interrupts that rhythm.  When that happens, the adjustment can feel frustrating at first.  You may find yourself asking questions like:

🌿 Why can’t I just push through this?

🌿 Why does everything feel slower?

🌿 Why does something that once felt effortless now take so much energy?

But over time, something interesting begins to happen.  Slowing down starts to change what you see.  You begin to notice where your energy is truly needed.  You begin to recognize how much of life we rush past without realizing it.  And you begin to understand something that’s easy to forget in a fast-moving world:

🌿 Progress doesn’t always mean moving faster.

🌿 Sometimes progress means moving with more intention.

The Things We Take for Granted

One of the biggest lessons this season has taught me is appreciation.  There are so many things we rarely think about until they become difficult.

🌿 Speaking without effort.

🌿 Holding long conversations.

🌿 Teaching without having to think about every word.

When those things change, you begin to celebrate progress in ways you never did before.

🌿 A conversation that flows a little easier.

🌿 A moment where your voice feels stronger.

🌿 A day where your energy holds steady.

These may seem like small things.  But when you’re rebuilding something, small progress becomes incredibly meaningful.

Rethinking What Resilience Really Means

We often talk about resilience as if it means pushing harder.  But, this experience has reminded me that resilience can look very different.

🌿 Sometimes resilience means adjusting your expectations.

🌿 Sometimes it means shifting timelines.

🌿 Sometimes it means honoring your body while still holding onto the purpose that drives you.

Over the past few months, I’ve had to learn how to keep moving forward without forcing the pace.

🌿 Not stopping.

🌿 Just adjusting.

And, strangely enough, that kind of growth often becomes more sustainable.  Because it’s built on awareness rather than urgency.

A Different Kind of Strength

🌿 I’m still coaching.

🌿 Still building.

🌿 Still creating.

But, I’m doing it with a deeper appreciation for the things I once took for granted and a clearer understanding of what truly matters.  Sometimes strength looks like pushing through obstacles.  But, sometimes strength looks like honoring the season you’re in and choosing to move forward in a way that supports your well-being.

🌿 Both are forms of resilience.

🌿 And both require courage.

If You’re in a Season Like This

Many people experience seasons where life forces them to slow down.

🌿 Health challenges.

🌿 Burnout.

🌿 Unexpected transitions.

🌿 Moments that shift perspective in ways we didn’t anticipate.

If you’re navigating one of those seasons right now, I want you to know something important.  You don’t have to abandon your goals.  You may just need to adjust the path you take to reach them.  Progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.  And, sometimes the most powerful growth happens when we learn how to move forward in a new way.
