How to Navigate Identity Shifts, Energy Changes, and a New Normal
The Moment Everything Feels DIFFERENT.
There’s a moment that doesn’t arrive all at once.
It doesn’t come with a clear beginning or a defined turning point.
It shows up quietly.
🌿 In how something that used to feel normal… doesn’t anymore.
🌿 In how your energy shifts, even when you’re trying to keep up.
🌿 In how things that once felt automatic now require more thought, more awareness, more intention.
At first, it’s easy to overlook.
You might assume it’s temporary.
That things will “go back to normal.”
That once you feel better, everything else will fall back into place.
But sometimeS, that’s not what happens.
The Reality Most People Don’t Talk About
We’re often taught to think of change in a very linear way:
👉 Something happens
👉 You adjust
👉 You go back to how things were
But, real life doesn’t always work that way.
Sometimes, the experience changes you.
And, when that happenS, there isn’t a version of “before” to return to.
This is especially true when navigating:
• health challenges or new diagnoses (like MCAS)
• burnout or chronic stress
• major life transitions
• emotional or identity shifts
You don’t just recover, you recalibrate.
What an Identity Shift Actually Feels Like
An identity shift isn’t always obvious.
It often feels like:
• Not quite feeling like yourself, even when things are improving
• Questioning routines or habits that once felt natural
• Becoming more aware of your limits (and not being able to ignore them)
• Feeling a disconnect between who you were and how you function now
This can be frustrating.
Because from the outside, things may look “better.”
But internally, you know something has changed.
And, that awareness matters.
Why “Going Back to Normal” Can Hold You Back
One of the biggest challenges in this season is the desire to return to who you were.
To function the same way.
To move at the same pace.
To meet the same expectations.
But here’s the truth:
👉 That version of you existed under different circumstances.
Trying to operate exactly the same way can actually create:
• increased frustration
• unnecessary pressure
• physical or emotional setbacks
• a constant feeling of “falling short”
Takeaways
Redefine “Normal”
Instead of asking:
“How do I get back to normal?”
Start asking:
👉 “What does support look like for me now?”
👉 “What actually feels sustainable?”
👉 “What needs to be adjusted based on where I am today?”
Your new normal isn’t a limitation.
It’s information.
The Shift from Force → Awareness
In seasons of change, many people default to:
• pushing through
• overriding signals
• maintaining old patterns
But long-term growth doesn’t come from ignoring what’s changed.
It comes from understanding it.
This is where awareness becomes essential.
Noticing:
• what drains you now
• what supports you now
• what feels misaligned
• what feels right
Awareness Is a Skill
You can strengthen this by asking yourself:
• What feels different today compared to before?
• Where am I using more energy than I need to?
• What feels supportive, even in a small way?
Awareness doesn’t slow you down.
It helps you move forward in a way that actually works.
Letting Go of What No Longer Fits
Another difficult part of this process is realizing:
Not everything is meant to carry forward.
Even things that:
• once worked really well
• felt familiar and comfortable
• were part of your identity
This doesn’t mean those things were wrong.
It just means…
they may not fit in the same way anymore.
Reevaluate Your Energy
Instead of giving everything the same level of attention, ask:
👉 “Does this still deserve the same level of energy?”
👉 “Is this helping me or just something I’m used to?”
👉 “What would it look like to approach this differently?”
This is how you begin to create space for what actually supports you now.
The Emotional Side No One Prepares You For
Even positive change can come with:
• frustration
• grief for how things used to feel
• uncertainty about what’s next
And that’s normal.
Because you’re not just adjusting your routines…
You’re adjusting your sense of self.
You Can Feel Both
You can:
• feel better and still feel different
• make progress and still feel frustrated
• move forward and still be figuring things out
These things can exist at the same time.
Moving Forward Without Going Back
At some point, the question shifts from:
“How do I get back?”
to:
“How do I move forward from here?”
And that’s where real growth happens.
Not in recreating who you were…
But in learning how to move forward
as someone who has changed.
Build a New Way Forward
Start small:
• Adjust your expectations (especially of yourself)
• Create space for rest and recalibration
• Let your current capacity guide your decisions
• Focus on what feels sustainable, not just possible
Closing Reflection
This kind of season doesn’t come with a clear roadmap.
There’s no perfect way to navigate it.
Just a willingness to notice what’s changed and the courage to move forward anyway.
Final Thought
You’re not behind.
You’re not doing it wrong.
You’re just in the middle of something that’s still unfolding.
And that matters more than you think.
